A Mighty Fortress

Today's post is another trip back to 2011 when I was back in Indiana, and was kind of forced to look beyond the parks for my photography, so I turned to the city. I found myself wandering around downtown after work (working in a downtown office building does have its perks) or coming up a few hours earlier than typical for a TinCaps game to spend some time with my camera wandering around. Fort Wayne is a pretty nice city, and there were lots of places I took pictures, its just that most of them didn't make my overly critical cut. This one, however, is one of my favorites that I've taken in Ft. Wayne; the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

The church is part of the Cathedral Square complex, which also includes a rectory, secondary chapel, the Cathedral Center, and the Ft. Wayne - South Bend diocese offices. The ramp and stairs up to the main entrance of the cathedral make for quite a grand approach, and I tried to capture that with this low angle shot. Unfortunately it did cut off the tops of the bell towers, but it was a compromise I had to make, as shooting it in portrait orientation was not going to happen easily crouching as low as I was (I was basically laying down). I'm disappointed that I never took the time to take a tour of the cathedral and the grounds, as I've seen some pretty impressive pictures of the chapel and inside the cathedral, but that's what future visits are for, right!?

If you're in Fort Wayne and enjoy architecture, this is definitely something you want to see, along with Parkview Field, which you'll be seeing in a not too distant future post.

As always, thanks for reading/viewing!
